What’s the story so far?

Motorola teased its rollable Rizr concept phone recently, but that’s not the only phone the company is working on based on the rumours.

We saw the launch of the third generation of Moto Razr in 2022 and there has been plenty of speculation to suggest another model is on the cards, or maybe even two, and they’re coming soon.

Here is everything we have heard so far about the Motorola Razr (2023) phones, which will be the fourth generation of folding flip phones for the Lenovo-owned company.

Motorola Razr (2022)

If you’re after a flip phone with flagship power, a large, vibrant screen and good battery life – and you don’t want to wait for the Razr (2023), the Motorola Razr (2022) is a solid option.

Motorola Razr 2023 release date and price

  • June 2023?
  • Around £949? Possible Lite model

Motorola announced the original Razr flip phone back in 2019, with the folding device quickly followed by a 5G version in 2020.

We then didn’t see the third generation until October 2022, though it did see a China release in August 2022 so we knew about it before it became more widely available.

While many would have assumed the next generation of the device might arrive towards the second half of 2023, it’s been rumoured the Motorola Razr 2023 could arrive on 1 June. That would be quite a bit sooner than many expected. For now, it’s not clear how set in stone that date is, nor how much the Razr 2023 will cost.

It’s also said that we’ll be seeing two models this year, a full-fat flagship model and a cut-down model with a lower price point. The Razr (2022) model started at £949, which is around the same as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. We’d expect competitive pricing to continue, and in all likelihood, the less feature-packed model will come in under that price point.

What will the Motorola Razr 2023 models be called?

  • Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra looking most likely
  • Possibly called Motorola Razr Lite and Razr Plus

When the first renders were published, the new phones were being referred to as the Motorola Razr Lite and Razr Plus. However, after the leak of some official press renders, it’s looking more likely that the phones will be called the Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra.

The standard 40 would be the model we have been referring to as Lite and the Ultra is the Razr (2023).

Is there a Motorola Razr Lite on the way?

  • Possibly called the Motorola Razr 40
  • Leaks point toward a two-tier strategy for 2023
  • Renders show a smaller outer display

One of the earliest rumours about the 2023 Motorola Razr came courtesy of Evan Blass back in October 2022, just prior to the launch of Razr 2022. He said that there would be two models in 2023, which are codenamed Juno and Venus.

This early rumour is looking more and more likely, with OnLeaks sharing renders of the upcoming device in April 2023 and seemingly official press renders landing via Mysmartprice in May.

The renders show a similar clamshell-style foldable design but with a drastically smaller display on the outside, the exact dimensions are unknown but it could be a similar size to the one on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The interior display has a central punch-hole selfie camera and there are two camera modules on the outside.

There are three colour variants to choose from and all versions feature a vegan leather back panel. You’ll be able to pick it up in olive green, purple and cream options, and they look rather fetching, too. Other specs have not yet been revealed, but we’re looking forward to hearing more.

To make any kind of splash, the Razr Lite would need to undercut the Oppo Find N2 Flip, which is already aggressively priced for a flip phone, if it can do that, we might have something exciting on our hands.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra design

  • Clamshell design with rounder edges
  • Larger external display
  • Barberry (pink), Black, and Blue colour options

The Motorola Razr saw quite a big design change between the 2020 model and the 2022 model, with the chin at the bottom of the device being removed and a fingerprint print sensor being placed within the power button.

The leaked renders of the Moto Razr 40 Ultra show that the design will remain similar to the 2022 model but make a couple of further improvements, including a much larger external display. Quite possibly the largest one to be featured on a clamshell foldable so far, with large punch-hole cutouts for the rear cameras.

The design looks a bit more rounded and friendly than previous models, and it’s available in three attractive colourways. These are said to be called Barberry, Black and Blue. Barberry is a striking pink colour that reminds us of some classic Motorola designs, like the Pebl and original Razr.

Elsewhere, we’d expect to see a water-repellent coating again, like the 2020 and 2022 models both offered, though it would be great to see a more official IP rating.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra display

  • 6.67-inch main display or larger
  • Larger external display – roughly 3.4-3.6 inches

We’ve already mentioned the giant cover display, but the exact specifications are hard to pin down. We expect that it will be around 3.5 inches in size, based on the leaked renders.

Currently, the largest external display on a flip phone is on the Oppo Find N2 Flip, which was announced globally in the middle of February. It has a 3.26-inch external display, which is a little larger than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and its 1.9-inch display. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also rumoured to come with a larger external display though.

The 2022 model features a 6.67-inch main foldable display, which increased from the 6.2 inches on the Razr 5G. It has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 144Hz. We’d expect the 2023 model to offer at least the same size main display as its predecessor, and we’d expect a punch-hole camera at the top of this display too.

Rumours have claimed that the internal display will be 6.9 inches with a refresh rate of either 144Hz or 165Hz, which would make a lot of sense.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2?
  • At least 8GB RAM, 128GB storage
  • At least 3500mAh battery

For now, rumours surrounding what hardware and specs might appear under the hood of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra are thin on the ground, though we would expect some improvements on the 2022 model.

The 2022 model runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, but it will likely depend on when the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra launches as to what it runs.

If the June launch date is accurate, we’d expect to see the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform on board, though one Geekbench listing claims that it will still feature the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which would be a little disappointing.

We’d expect to see at least 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage, which was the base model for the 2022 model. We’d also expect to see at least a 3500mAh battery again, though we’d love to see this capacity increase and match the likes of the Oppo Find N2 Flip which has a 4300mAh battery and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 that has a 3700mAh capacity.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra cameras

  • Dual rear cameras
  • Selfie camera on the main display

So far, little has been revealed about what cameras can expect to see on the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, though this is an area we would like to see the fourth generation model step it up compared to its predecessor.

We do know that the rear cameras will be nestled amongst the exterior display, which is a very cool look, and it’s expected there will be a punch-hole front camera at the top of the main display too.

The 2022 model has a 50-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and OIS, which is complemented by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. The selfie camera is 32 megapixels with an f/2.45 aperture.

In our experience, neither the ultra-wide sensor nor the selfie camera were the best performers so we’d hope to see some more improvements in this department, it’s just not yet clear what these could be.
